Greener Light bulbs: make that switch with ease
If you ask for explanations for starting to use the fluorescent light
bulbs instead of the traditional ones, you usually get two answers: the
new type of light bulbs is 1) Earth-friendly and 2) pocket-friendly at
the same time. Since the fluorescent bulbs last up to ten times longer
than the traditional bulbs and produce less warmth, you do not have to
replace them as often and the cost of air conditioning - mainly in
large offices - also declines. Besides, one traditional light bulb
needs as much energy as three fluorescent ones. This is both
environment and pocket friendly as well.
Except for running a MLS
agency, I'm always looking for quick and easy tips to help my client's
lifestyle a bit more greener. Most customers are not experts and may
feel that the selection of fluorescent light bulbs is very wide, making
it very difficult to pick the right one. The following guidelines
should make the process much easier and nicer experience.
Mr. Bulb Right
If you are not sure about the right type
of bulb you need, the best idea would be to bring your old light bulb
with you so that you can make sure the shape and size matches. When
using the fluorescent bulbs, check the wattage - the new bulbs use up
only one quarter of the energy needed by the traditional ones (60 watt
traditional bulb = 15 watt fluorescent bulb). It is important to read
the label carefully, especially if you want to put your new bulb in a
dimmer light - not all types of light bulbs are suitable for dimmers.
Where to use fluorescent bulbs
These
fluorescent bulbs are not suitable for use in hot places with little
air flow (recessed ceiling fixture). The fluorescent bulb is not lit up
instantly as the traditional one. It usually takes something between
one and three minutes for it to give proper light, so it may be damaged
if it is lit up and then turned off again in a short time. So the
fluorescent bulbs are best to be used in places where the light usually
stays on for at least 15 minutes, otherwise the bulb could get damaged
too early.
The right light
After your light bulb
has served you its time, you should always recycle it at your local
recycling place. Be very careful if you break a fluorescent bulb. There
is some mercury in it, which is a poisonous heavy-metal. Do not try to
clean it with a vacuum cleaner. It is also dangerous to touch the
mercury with bare hands. It's better to clean the larger bits with a
piece of cardboard. Then apply some sticky tape to remove the remaining
tiny bits and wipe the area with a wet cloth. It is also a good idea to
open the window in the room for at least 15 minutes so that you prevent
mercury poisoning.
